THE CUSTOM OF GIFT GIVING
It is the custom in most cultures to celebrate joyous occasions, among other things, with the giving or exchanging of gifts. In poorer cultures it becomes a non-embarrassing means of sharing what one has with others who may be less fortunate. Customs like these predate history back to when primates presented gifts of food etc. to those in a higher-ranking position, or to a mate. In our earliest known cultures the cave man certainly brought in gifts to others in the tribe especially those of the opposite sex for obvious reasons. They probably learned that it was at least as effective as the club. Throughout history this has certainly become the norm. At holidays such as birthdays, anniversaries, as well as other occasions, it has become the custom to give gifts to those the day was set up for. At Christmas the custom of gift giving and exchanging dates back to the story of the three magi (wise men) bearing gifts to the Christ child. . The custom of gift giving, for most of us of course, is to either show interest or appreciation to our loved ones.
