P Buckley Moss
Patricia Buckley was born in New York City in 1933, the daughter of Irish, Sicilian parents. Being dyslexic, Patricia, at that time was perceived as a slow student because dyslexia was very much misunderstood. Her teachers encouraged her because they found that she was very artistically talented. Her mother, because of this encouragement, enrolled her at the Washington Irving High School for the fine arts. In 1931 she received a scholarship to New York’s Cooper Union for the fine arts where she excelled. After leaving school , she married Jack Moss, a chemical engineer. Jack’s work took the family of 8 to rural Waynesboro,Virginia. It was there that she developed a fascination for the Amish and Mennonite religions. This rural lifestyle in the Shenandoah Valley, encouraged a rebirth of her artistic career and ambitions. In 1967 she won the first of many art show prizes. The warmth and unique style she exhibited soon won her wide recognition. Today she enjoys tremendous success, through not only her artistic endeavors, but also her devotion to helping children with special education problems where she has become a role model.
In 1987 the P. Buckley Moss society was established to help carry on her artistic endeavors as well as her work in helping those adults and children in need of special help. This society now has some 38 chapters and 15,000 members. In 1989 the P. Buckley Moss museum opened in Waynesboro, Virginia. With 40,000 visitors per year , it has become a beacon for some of the best examples of her artistic creativity.
